Microsoft Tests File Sharing Between iPhones and Windows PCs

If you’re using an iPhone with a Windows PC as your main computer, there’s some good news: Microsoft is making file sharing between the two platforms easier.

With the latest updates for the Phone Link app for Windows PCs and the Link to Windows app for iOS devices, Microsoft is now letting Windows Insiders share files from their iPhones to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and vice versa.

To start transferring from an iPhone, navigate to what you want to share, tap the “Share” icon, select “Link to Windows,” and select your PC. The feature requires an iPhone running iOS 16 or later.

To do the reverse, select files on your Windows PC, right-click on them, and pick “My Phone.” If you don’t see “My Phone” as an option, select “Phone Link.”

Microsoft launched Phone Link for Windows PCs last year. It allows Windows users to remotely access their iPhones to make phone calls, check notifications, send and receive iMessages, and view photos and contacts.

But compared to the Windows options with Android, iOS Phone Link offers limited features, primarily due to Apple’s OS restrictions. For example, Windows users can send and reply to iMessages from individual contacts, but they can’t do so for group texts. And while Android users can mirror phone apps via Phone Link, iOS users can’t. They still need to rely on third-party software.

The latest file-sharing feature is a valuable addition to the Phone Link app but is currently limited to users who have signed up for the Windows Insider Program. After this testing phase, the feature should start rolling out to all users in the coming months.
