Microsoft Pushes Copilot+ PCs on Windows 10 Users With Pop-Up Ads

Microsoft has started sending full-screen pop-ups to some Windows 10 users to get them to upgrade to Windows 11 by buying a Copilot+ PC.

While you don’t need to buy a whole new computer just to get Windows 11, Microsoft argues that a Copilot+ PC, which comes with a slew of AI features, is the “ultimate Windows 11 experience.”

One X user shared the pop-up they got on Nov. 17, and news outlets began sharing details about the new notifications on Wednesday.

Windows 10 is still a popular OS; it’s holding on to about 61% of global market share, according to StatCounter, partly because of Windows 11’s stricter system requirements. But Microsoft is set to end official support for Windows 10 in October 2025, so it’s trying to nudge people to its newer OS and AI-infused Copilot+ PCs.

Windows 11 is a free upgrade for Windows 10 users if your existing PC is compatible. You don’t need to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on a new machine, but if you’re looking for a new PC, there are some Copilot PCs out there like the Asus Zenbook S 16, Vivobook S 14, or Vivobook 14 Flip as well as others from Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft itself.

Windows 11 users aren’t immune to Microsoft ads either, though. Earlier this year, Microsoft started pushing more discreet Start Menu ads to Windows 11 users by showing them apps they don’t have yet but could buy or download through the Microsoft Store. Users have also previously complained about “massive ads across the top half” of a 14-inch screen, while others have started seeing gaming-related ads on Windows 11 this month.
