LG’s Apple Monitor Clone Gets Serious Upgrades at CES

Tucked away among LG’s many display and TV reveals at CES 2025 was the announcement of a new UltraFine monitor, the first 6K monitor to support Thunderbolt 5.

That’s a huge deal for Apple users with M4 Pro Mac mini or M4 MacBook Pros, both of which use the new connectivity standard. Revealed in 2023, Thunderbolt 5 offers double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, supporting a data throughput of up to 80Gbps or up to 120Gbps with the help of Intel’s Bandwidth Boost mode.

The 32-inch LG UltraFine 6K Monitor (Model 32U990A) also features a Nano IPS Black panel, which LG says “delivers exceptional color accuracy and a high contrast with a wide color gamut covering 99.5% of Adobe RGB and 98% of DCI-P3.” The thin display and base also give the LG UltraFine an Apple-like appearance, similar to the Apple Pro Display XDR and the Apple Studio Display. Color calibration software support rounds out the list of features.

LG did not announce availability or pricing, but if monitors like the Dell UltraSharp 32 6K (which retails for a whopping $2,479.99) are any indication, we expect it to cost a few thousand dollars.

It’s been several years since the last UltraFine monitor launched. PCMag reviewed the now-discontinued 4K version (24MD4KL-B) and found it was a good choice for people with a Mac desktop who needed a sharp, not-too-big display. However, we didn’t like its spotty support for Windows PCs and found that the chassis’s look wasn’t as Mac-minded as we expected.

That isn’t the case with the new 6K version, which appears to have copied the aesthetic of the Pro Display XDR, complete with an articulating silver stand and vanishingly thin bezels. Stay tuned for our full review once the UltraFine 6K goes on sale.
