The Las Vegas transit system is now the first in the country to implement a system-wide AI surveillance system. The system scans passengers for weapons in an attempt to curb violence in the city.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is rolling out the technology as part of a $33 million multi-year upgrade to the system. The Commission partnered with the gun detection software company ZeroEyes for the technology, CNBC reports.
The hope is that by adding the technology to the city’s more than 400 busses, they’ll be able to potentially identify individuals brandishing a firearm prior to anyone being injured by that weapon. When the system detects a gun, it will notify its operations center, which is staffed by retired law enforcement, which will determine if it’s a threat or a false alarm.

The city says that there’s no specific incident that prompted the implementation of the technology, only that the city is always thinking about the potential risks in a city of its size.
